Every other year, we ask our community to help us understand the strengths and needs of King County families through the Best Starts for Kids Health Survey (BSKHS). In order to prioritize equity and community voice in this process, we also partner with communities to hold a series of conversations about the survey data, known as “community cafes,” to make sure our data equitably and accurately represents King County families.  

Beginning this week, about 15,000 randomly chosen families with children in elementary school or younger will receive a postcard and letter asking them to take the Best Starts for Kids Health Survey to help Best Starts for Kids answer these important questions about our kids’ health and well-being.

Best Starts knew that in order to achieve our goal of serving the most historically underfunded communities and the organizations that support them, we needed to make our funding processes more accessible than they have been in the past. That’s why we’ve provided technical assistance to community-based organizations wanting support in applying for Best Starts funds since June 2017. Since then we've provided 229+ organizations more than 2,914 hours of technical assistance! Here are some of our learnings as we asked partners what has worked and what hasn't.
