School-Based Health Centers

Published November 16, 2025

School-based health centers (SBHC) meet students where they are by offering comprehensive primary medical, behavioral health, and in some cases, dental services from clinics located within schools across King County. SBHC services support children and youth by increasing access to high-quality, equitable, culturally relevant health care services to support each student’s overall well-being and educational success, including school performance, grade promotion, and high school completion.

Beginning in 2018, Best Starts for Kids funded operations for 3 SBHCs which provided services to approximately 1000 students annually across all centers. In the renewed Best Starts levy, 2 new clinics opened in the 2022-2023 school year. These 5 sites served more than 1800 students with more than 6300 visits in the 2024-2025 school year. Additional funding to strengthen systems and service delivery for existing SBHCs across King County have been implemented since 2023.
