Best Starts for Kids is seeking to hire a Child Mortality Prevention Program Manager to lead a collaboration between Public Health – Seattle & King County (PHSKC), Best Starts for Kids and internal and external stakeholder partners to facilitate the county’s Child Death Review process and implement strategies that incorporate equity and social justice. This work takes a collaborative approach as it is vital to bring various partners together to identify strategies to reduce preventable child deaths and protect vulnerable children.

Best Starts for Kids (Best Starts) is King County’s community-driven initiative to support every baby born and child raised in King County to be happy, healthy, safe, and thriving. Initially approved by voters in 2015 and in place since 2016, Best Starts invests in comprehensive supports for children, youth, young adults, and families and caregivers, catalyzing strong starts in early childhood, and sustaining those gains as children progress to adulthood. Best Starts was renewed by voters in August 2021. Implementation of Best Starts is guided by the BSK Implementation Plan, approved by the King County Council in November 2021 for Levy 2022-27.
Job Duties of the Child Mortality Prevention Program Manager include:
- Manage, coordinate, and facilitate King County’s Child Death Review process
- Review cases for individuals aged 0 to 17 including reviewing case data from various sources, such as the medical examiner, law enforcement, medical records, and other relevant sources
- Follow up on actions and strategies identified as part of the reviews, in collaboration with PHSKC’s policy team
- Convene, organize, and facilitate reviews, and work with PHSKC’s policy team and other partners to follow up on implementation of policy, prevention and education opportunities
- Lead or assist to address community needs and development of policy, systems, or environmental changes
- Ensure compliance to Child Death Review protocols and serve as the technical expert to perform complex research and analysis of preventable child deaths and identify promising and best practices
- Supervise student internships and projects as needed
Required Experience and Qualifications:
- Knowledge of equity and social justice principles and practices, and understanding of the effects of place, race and policy and systems-based inequities on communities and populations.
- Knowledge of the social determinants of health and drivers of health inequity
- At least 3 years of experience convening diverse partners (i.e. non-profits, governmental agencies, community and faith-based organizations, schools, law enforcement, etc.) to gain their commitments, and operationalize those commitments, including implementing services and meeting outcomes
- Experience working to improve health outcomes for children and youth (ages 0-17)
- Experience with building and nurturing relationships with partners
- Strong public speaking skills, including ability to translate programmatic and/or technical documents for variety of audiences
- Advanced knowledge of project management techniques and principles
- Ability to multitask and work independently
- Knowledge of other relevant agencies and systems in King County and Washington State
- Strong formal written ability, including ability to write a variety of documents for various audiences
- Knowledge of research and analysis methods
- Understanding of the impacts of trauma and resiliency, to include vicarious/secondary trauma and the need for self-care
- Experience leading the design and implementation of large-scale events
- Ability to input, track, and analyze data trends
Desired experience and qualifications:
- Experience reviewing child deaths and/or experience in any specialty related to preventable child deaths
