Background

In February, Pilot research partner Urban Institute, launched a comprehensive survey to deepen our knowledge about the child care workforce in King County. Over 1,000 child care workers participated. The survey provides Pilot partners and King County new insights into the current experience of child care workers in King County. These learnings can both help us understand the benefits of government investments in child care workers and provide early data to workers themselves.

This survey provides important learnings on:

  • Who makes up the workforce
  • Workplace wages and benefits, and other experiences
  • Workers’ well-being, connection to the field, and challenges experienced

Urban Institute will present an overview of survey themes and Pilot partners will reflect on these learnings while sharing thoughts on how this survey supports Pilot learnings and future workforce supports.

This presentation is for:

  • Child care workers
  • Community based organizations and other institutions working alongside child care workers, to develop funding or programs
  • Coalitions, advocates, organizers, and policy makers interested in creating a sustainable and thriving child care sector

A recording will be available for those who are unable to attend.

Measuring Indigenous identities: learnings from Best Starts’ evaluation team

The exclusion and erasure of Indigenous people in data is rooted in colonial research practices that are deeply embedded in Western systems of data. Indigenous people have always a collected, analyzed, and shared data in their own ways that have been ignored and discounted by many “mainstream” data projects. This underscores the need to rethink race and ethnicity measures with Indigenous people, organizations, and Native nations.
